Edgar Allan Poe Biography
Written by Dalton Stevens

Edgar Allan Poe lived a life in poverty and tragedy. His life was surrounded by death including that of his 13 year old cousin and wife. During his life he took to poetry because he lived in debt for most of his life. Being able to pay his bills for West Point is one of the main reasons Poe wrote his first collection of poems. In Poe's death many mysteries came about, one being the way Edgar A. Poe actually died. Many rumors have circulated dealing with how he died. Rabies, arsenic suicide, alcoholism, drug overdose, and some even say pneumonia took his life. All we really know is that he was found in a gutter hanging on to consciousness, and he was transported to a hospital where he later died. During his time at the hospital, records state that Edgar was crying and shaking violently. It's also stated he screamed the name Reynolds on multiple occasions, bringing yet another mystery behind the name. But, this mystery isn't comparable to the current mystery. On Poe’s birthday, January 19, every year a man dressed in all black walking with a cane visits his grave. This seems as if the man is only a fan honoring his favorite poet, but this man is also leaves 3 roses and a bottle of cognac on his tomb. No one knows who this fan is nor do they want anyone to know. This too, like Poe's death, will probably remain a mystery for eternity.
